Link relationship to an existing contact

Once you've added a family member, you have two options: either

  1. leave the relationship as is, or
  2. link it to an existing contact in the database.

Wondering when to use each one? Keep reading.

Unlinked relationship

Use this option for family members or others whose names you want to recall but don't need a full contact profile for, such as children, pets, or non-primary contacts not on your email marketing list.

Linked relationship

Use this option for family members or others who have a separate contact profile. This is recommended for spouses that you communicate with individually, have detailed contact info and reminders for (e.g., birthdays), and want as separate recipients on your email marketing list.

To specify a linked relationship, each contact must have a separate profile record in your database. Then, in the family and relationships editor, click on the Search contacts field under the relationship you want to link.

Type in the name and select the contact profile to be linked.

Be sure to enter the correct relationship type (spouse, partner, husband, wife, etc.).

Add birthday for a family member

This is meant only to be used for unlinked relationships (i.e. the person does not exist as a separate contact in your database).

Go to your reminders in the top right of the contact's profile.

Click Add birthday. (If there is already a reminder set on the contact profile, click on the plus sign button.)

Customize the Title field to indicate that this is the family member's birthday

Set the Start date to the family member's birthday.

Click Save.

Adding more relationships

From the contact's profile, click the plus sign button to the right of the Family & Relationships left-hand panel.

Type in the name and relationship of the new connection.

Click Save.
